Thanatology does not focus solely on death, but emphasizes the part of life, or how to live, that is revealed by focusing on death. Death exists because we are alive. This means that life and death are not to be seen as separate things, but as an integrated whole.
When death becomes an issue for us, we are faced with the task of how to live. When it is hard to live, we may want to die or disappear. The pain of living makes us think of death. Therefore, I define thanatology as the study of life, including death. Since all people die, the subject of thanatology is not the terminally ill or the elderly but deals with the universal tasks of all people from birth to death.
