私の研究分野である地域・都市・交通経済学は、交通費用や地代など空間や距離の概念を考慮するため、一般的な一点経済学の体系ではなく、空間経済学と呼ばれる体系に含まれます。特に、交通経済学では、企業立地、物流さらに在庫管理を含めたロジスティックスから、公共交通サービスや国際貨物輸送、そして交通整備・改善まで幅広い問題を扱います。交通投資は、都市、地域、国そして国際経済に大きな影響を与えるため、道路整備や空港建設など、経済政策を議論する際には、対象となる都市経済や地域経済との深い関わりを理解し、政策評価・決定することが重要です。私の研究は、こうした地域あるいは国を対象とした交通部門の効率性評価や交通整備による経済効果の分析です。これまで、港湾部門を含む国際海上輸送を対象に、港湾利用者の行動分析や港湾輸送需要の推計、さらに港湾運営の効率性評価や港湾整備・改善による経済効果などの研究をしてきました。
