ヒトの持つ言語の知識は、ヒトのみが獲得できる性質であり、またヒトに生まれると誰でも獲得することができる性質です。したがって、いまだ謎の多いヒトの「こころ/脳」の仕組みと発達過程に関する理解を深めるためには、母語の知識とその獲得を科学的に研究することが近道となりそうです。「生成文法理論」と呼ばれる現代言語理論では、母語知識の獲得は(a)幼児が生後まわりの大人の発話から取り込む言語情報と(b)遺伝によりヒトに生得的に与えられた母語獲得のための仕組みとの相互作用により達成される、と仮定されています。さらに、この生得的な仕組みには、全ての言語が満たすべき制約と、言語の可能な異なり方を定めた制約の2種類が含まれていると考えられています。私の研究では、幼児の母語獲得過程を様々な手法を用いて詳細に調査することでこれらの制約の存在とその具体的な性質を明らかにし、それを通してヒトの「こころ/脳」の本質に迫ることを目指しています。
