自然環境に強く依存する集団を対象に、フィールドワークを通じて生業活動・消費・再生産等について明らかにすることで、集団の存続を可能とする適応形態の解明を目的とした研究に従事している。同時に、人々を取り巻く自然・社会環境は急激に変化していることから、これらの変化が住民の生活・生存に及ぼす影響に関する研究を行っている。これまでの主な調査地は、パプアニューギニア及びマダガスカルである．
