　現在の日本における，地域の文化や民俗の多くは，大正から昭和初期にかけて見られた，様々な動き，例えば，民俗学や民具学のような学術的な動きや，民芸運動や郷土玩具趣味のような文化的・趣味的な動く，あるいは，農民美術運動のような社会運動的要素を持った動きなどのなかで，価値あるものとして位置づけられ，その文化的価値を継承したものとなっています。私の研究は，おもに伝統的とされる手工芸（とくに陶芸）を事例として，こうした文化の価値付けと，その地域への影響を検討することを主としています。そして，このことを基盤としつつ，無形文化財（「人間国宝」）のような制度的な枠組み，民俗学ブームや民芸ブームなど観光／メディアに関わる事象，近年のセレクショショップなどにおける伝統的手工の展示や販売などファッションと伝統との関わりといった内容について考察を行っています。
　教育においても，こうしたことを受けつつ，ある種の文化価値付けが現在の地域文化の形成に与える影響の，地理学・地域文化学的な意義や意味を考えることを，講義や演習での主眼の一つとしています。
