私たち多細胞生物の体は小さな1つ1つの細胞によって構成されています。同一の性質を持つ細胞が一定の規則により配列することにより組織を構築し、さらにいくつかの組織が集合することで器官を形成しています。組織が一連の構造体として機能するためには、個々の細胞同士を繋ぎ止め、協調させるための細胞間接着は非常に重要な役割を担っています。細胞間接着構造体の1つであるデスモソームは主に表皮や心臓において良く発達しており、細胞同士を強く接着させることにより、それらの組織の構築や維持において重要な働きを担っています。デスモソームの構成タンパク質やその構造は徐々に明らかになりつつありますが、デスモソームは非常に複雑な構造体であるため、その形成機構や作用機構は未だ十分に解明されていません。私は培養細胞を用いて、このデスモソームという構造がどのような仕組みにより形成され、機能しているのかを明らかにすることを目的に研究を行っています。それによって私たちの体が形成される仕組みの一端を明らかにできることを期待しています。
