私の専門は身体の社会学で、社会と身体の相互的な支えあいやくいちがいを、ミクロな身体的実践のレベルで実証することがテーマです。これまでは、イギリスにある太極拳教室の調査をしてきました。西洋近代的な教育方法では、それぞれの生徒のレベルに応じたクラス分けがなされることが一般的ですが、私が調査した太極拳教室では、初心者も上級者も同じ教室の空間で、同じ指導者のもと、同じ型の動作を繰り返します。このような教室で、生徒たちが指導者のうちに習得に値する身体技法を発見したうえで、意欲的に練習に取り組みつづけるためには、生徒たちおよび指導者はそれぞれどのような条件を満たしている必要があるのでしょうか。理論的には、社会学者のM・モース、P・ブルデュー、H・ガーフィンケル、生態心理学者のJ・ギブスン、文化人類学者のT・インゴールドなどを参考に研究を進めています。
