Teaching and Research Fields
I obtained my doctorate at the University of Oxford in 2001 with a thesis on the poetics of Japanese translations of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', and follow a range of interests in Shakespeare studies, translation studies, drama and poetics. I began my research in 1997 with the assumption that some kind of equivalence was possible between Shakespeare's English and modern Japanese, but have gradually come to realize that no translation can (or should) be a precise equivalent, and that in discussing Japanese translations of Shakespeare, we are limited to discussing 'the art of the possible'. While my thesis emphasized the hermeneutics of translation, for example the way that translators interpret Shakespeare's prosody through their native poetic devices, in my recent essays I have tried to adopt a more historical approach, looking mainly at the work of the pioneer of Japanese Shakespeare translation Tsubouchi Shōyō (1859-1935).
