Teaching and Research Fields
光合成と言えば「葉っぱ」すなわち植物を思い浮かべる人が多いかと思いますが、実は地球上の光合成の約半分は、海洋に生息する藻類が担っています。海に生息する藻類の多くは、紅藻を葉緑体として取り込む「二次共生」という独自の進化を経ており、葉緑体が四枚の包膜に包まれている点や、デンプンの代わりに水溶性多糖を蓄積する点など、教科書に記載されている「植物」とはまったく異なる特徴を有します。私は、ハプト藻や珪藻などの海の藻類を材料とし、彼らが有する独自の光合成代謝系と生理学的な特徴を明らかにするために、分子生物学的・生化学的なアプローチから研究を行っています。これらの研究を通じて、なぜ現代の海洋で陸上植物とは異なる系譜を持つ二次共生藻類が繁栄しているのか、その答えを知りたいと考えています。
