 皮膚の重要な役割の一つとして、アレルゲンなどの物質が体内へ侵入することを防ぐ、いわゆる皮膚バリア機能が挙げられます。このバリア機能は、皮膚の最外層に位置する厚さわずか10μm程度の角層と呼ばれる領域が担っており、正常な皮膚バリア機能を保つためには、角層中に存在する細胞間脂質(セラミドなど)が正常な構造を形成していなければなりません。近年、アトピー性皮膚炎などの皮疹部において、この細胞間脂質の構造に乱れが生じていることがわかってきました。
 逆に、経皮吸収する塗り薬や化粧品の観点から考えると、皮膚バリア機能は大きな障壁となります。この場合、角層細胞間脂質の構造を一時的に乱して、皮膚バリア機能を低下させることが要求されます。
 私の研究の目的は、この皮膚角層、特に細胞間脂質の構造特性をX線(放射光)や電子線を用いて明らかにすることにより、皮膚機能の改善や、より浸透しやすい薬品(経皮吸収薬)の開発に役立てることにあります。企業での研究経験を活かし、多くの企業と連携を図りながら当研究を展開しています。
