植物は、自然環境下において様々な微生物と相互作用を行うことで、個体の生長や形態、植生に至るまで大きな影響を与えます。 私たちは植物と微生物間の相利的な相互作用である「共生」の研究を行っています。アーバスキュラー菌根菌や根粒菌は、宿主植物の根に共生器官を形成し、リンやチッソなどの植物に必須の栄養素を与える代わりに、光合成産物などを得ています。これらアーバスキュラー菌根共生や根粒共生を共生研究のモデル系として、共生を制御する分子メカニズムや共生栄養供給能の解明に取り組んでいます。この研究では、最新の研究手法を取り入れながら植物・微生物双方からのアプローチで、基礎的研究を行うとともに、この研究の成果や基盤技術を発展させ、実用植物を用いて共生能の農学・工学的利用を目指す応用研究も行います。このような植物・微生物とそれらの間に存在する相互作用についての研究を通じて、生物学に関する広い知識と技術を身につけるとともに、新たな知識や技術を生み出す創造力や、その成果を他者に伝える科学的なコミュニケーション能力を養います。
