おもに、多項式環のグレブナー基底について研究しています。大雑把に言えば、グレブナー基底とは良い性質を持つ「多変数多項式の集まり」です。グレブナー基底理論では、ある多変数多項式を、複数の多変数多項式で割り算しますが、1変数、1個の多項式で割り算する場合と違って、色々工夫が必要になります。グレブナー基底の基本的な応用として、連立方程式の変数消去が挙げられますが、分割表（統計学）や凸多面体の三角形分割など、他にも諸分野への応用が知られており、様々な数式処理ソフトウエアに実装されています。
また、理工学部では、対称性を数学的に扱うための概念である群について学ぶ「代数学Ｉ」などの科目を担当しています。
