子どもに「何を教えるのか」という教育内容の編成、その実践に先立つ「何のために学ぶのか、何をこそ学べばよいのか」という教育目標、実際には「何をこそ本当に学んだのか」という教育評価による教育事実の解明について研究している。とりわけ、近代学校教育制度の中核であるトップ・ダウン方式の教育課程の編成による学級教授法に対する、子どもに寄り添いながらのボトム・アップ方式での教育課程の開発の理論構築とその実践方略について探究している。近年は、一単位時間での子どもの変容把握が難しい総合学習を中心としてカリキュラム更新の方略、及び我が国の学級教授法において問題とされる一斉画一的な閉塞的学習を打破するための視点を教師に当て、ティーム・ティーチング等による教授組織の改善についても考察している。
