自然界において生物は個体同士が互いに関わり合いを持ちながら生活しています。私の興味は「動物社会や種間共生といった複雑な生物間相互作用はどのように進化し維持されてきたのか？」です。アリは高度な社会を形成する真社会性昆虫として知られています。また、陸上生態系で最も繁栄した生物の一群であり、様々な他の生物と共生します。アリはコロニーと呼ばれる集団で生活し、もっぱら繁殖する女王や労働に特化したワーカー、巣の防衛に特化した兵隊など様々なカーストが分業することで協力的な社会を作ります。そのような社会では個体間の綿密なコミュニケーションが重要になってきますが、アリは聴覚や視覚よりも味覚や嗅覚といった化学感覚を主に用いて情報を伝達します。私はアリのコミュニケーションを化学物質・行動・脳・遺伝子レベルで解析し、昆虫社会や種間共生の成り立ちを理解したいと考えています。
