ことばの仕組みとその認知メカニズムを研究し、その成果を言語教育に生かすよう努めています。特に、第二言語の学習メカニズムに関心を持っています。
近年の研究テーマは、(1))「英語文法・語彙の学習と発達」、(2)「英語音節の構造と認識・生成の仕組み」、(3)「英語強勢の認識と生成の仕組み」等です。
(1)については、言語学習者はどのように文法と語彙を発達させていくのか、特に、新しい規則や表現を学ぶ際、潜在的な学習と明示的な学習ではどのように異なるのかについて調べています。また、母語話者と第二言語学習者の文法・語彙知識は、どのように、なぜ異なるかについても関心があります。
(2)に関しては、ことばの基本的単位である音節の構造と性質について、普遍性と言語個別性、および日本人英語学習者の特徴について明らかにしています。その成果を踏まえ、学生に英語単語の音節数や音節への分け方を学ばせ、英語音声の学習に役立てています。
(3)については、英語母語話者と日本人英語学習者の強勢の認識の相違点の一部を明らかにしています。学生には、英語の強勢の性質（強勢は強さ、長さ、高さ、母音の質等が関連すること）を、英語のリズムの仕組み（stress-timed rhythmであること）と共に伝え、英語の発音、ひいてはスピーキングの向上に貢献しています。
