近世から現代にかけての西洋史研究、とくにイギリス史研究を専門としています。人類が証券というものに初めて出会い、拒絶し、受け入れ、利用し、翻弄され、なんとかそれを手なずけようとしてきた社会を「投資社会」としてとらえ、その形成史をイギリスやオランダを中心とする空間を対象に通時的に研究しています。ここでいう「投資社会」とは、国家の信用を基盤にすえつつ、投資の原理をビルトインした社会のことをいいます。その意味では、ヨーロッパの近代社会は総じて「投資社会」であったとみなせます。これまで、こうした「投資社会」の勃興を近世から近代への移行期に見出し、その実態について実証研究を積み重ねて解明してきました。現在は、１９世紀の女性と投資、２０世紀の総力戦と「投資社会」との関係、さらには第二次大戦後の投資と貯蓄の社会史についても検討しています。また、イギリスを中心とする欧米社会だけではなく、視野を広げて欧米の旧植民地社会や日本もまた含めながら、「投資社会」のグローバル化の様態にも注目しています。
