私は社会言語学という分野の下で、コミュニケーション(言語及び非言語行動)の視点から日本で暮らす人々のアイデンティティ(再)構築について研究をしています。特に、民族性や人種、地域性、ジェンダー、世代、社会階層などの社会的なカテゴリーと言語・非言語行動がどのように人・文化・環境と関連付けられ、人々の多様なアイデンティティ(再)構築につながるのかについて、談話分析という手法で研究を進めています。
　主な研究目的は、コミュニケーションによって生じる誤解に関連した(非)言語行動や、調和的な人間関係の構築に向けた(非)言語文化実践及び社会機能を特定すること、そして異なる社会的カテゴリーを担う者同士のやりとりを通じて実践されるアイデンティティの(再)構築化のプロセスを明らかにすることなどです。
　多文化社会の中で加速する社会の分断や対立、格差は、上記の社会的なカテゴリーとも密接に関わっています。微力ではありますが、コミュニケーション研究を通じて、他者の持つ多様なアイデンティティへの尊重、そして自身のアイデンティティの認識の両方を見出すことで、多様な言語文化を担う者同士の共存、包摂する社会へと導いていくことが私の最終的な研究展望です。
