日本の農林水産業や農山漁村は、古来より不変な様式を維持しているとはいえない。近代における、海外を含む人口移動や商品流通の活発化に伴い、大きな変化がみられた。たとえば、茶や柑橘などの産物を海外へ輸出し、需要が少なく失敗するも、海外より新たな品種や技術を導入することで、産地形成を図る事例が各地でみいだせた。また、住民も村落にとどまらず、海外を含む各地へ移住し、起業して事業を拡大するとともに、品種や技術の導入の仲介や、出身地へ送金し生計維持に寄与する様子がみとめられた。一方、現代日本の主要な野菜・果実の多くは近代に導入された外来種であることや、近代より海外産の米や豆類などが庶民の日常食として多分に提供されていた点も注目される。つまり、日本の農林水産業や農山漁村の特性を、閉鎖的空間での内発的発展ではなく、近代のグローバリゼーションの文脈に位置づけ捉えていく必要がある。私は、このような視角から、近代日本の農林水産業や農山漁村の特性および変容過程について実証的研究を進めている。教育においても、上記の点を踏まえ、近代日本の地域形成とグローバリゼーションの影響について、多面的に理解することを意識している。
