西洋の美術、なかでも19世紀から20世紀にかけての近代美術を、隣接する学問や思想、あるいは同時代の社会との関わりから問い直す研究をしています。いつの時代でも、美術作品の制作と受容には、政治や科学、経済、思想など、様々な要素が大きく関与しています。私は、そのような文化的ダイナミズムの中で芸術を捉えることに興味があります。
　とりわけ、あらゆる分野で知の地殻変動が起こった特異なトポスとして知られている世紀末ウィーンの文化・芸術が私の研究対象です。世紀末ウィーンがいわゆる世紀末美術の中心地であると同時に精神分析の揺籃の地でもあることに着目し、美術と精神医学の関係に様々な角度からアプローチしています。また、そこから範疇を広げて、18世紀末のロマン主義から20世紀の近代美術に至るまでの「芸術と無意識」の系譜を描き出す研究にも着手したところです。
