私たちは自分の周りの世界をそのまま見ていて、まるで自分の心は世界の鏡であるかのように感じるかもしれません。しかし実際には、「見る」という行為はただ周囲の情報を受け入れてコンピュータのように処理するものではなく、環境との相互作用を通じて構成されている能動的な行動であるといえます。目の前の風景を眺めるとき、視線は固定されておらず、自分の近くに引き寄せ、また遠くになげうつことで、見ている風景を構成していきます。これは実際に見た風景と写真との違いを考えれば一目瞭然でしょう。つまり、「見る」という行為は、環境への働きかけを通じて「何を見ているのか？」を探る探索行動としてとらえることができます。この探索行動を人間をはじめとする生物の知覚の根幹ととらえて、探索行動を制御する要因を人間を対象とした行動実験を通じて明らかにすることが私の研究テーマです。
