人と人との日常的なコミュニケーションの分析を通して，人間のコミュニケーションや学習のメカニズムの認知的・社会的側面の両方からの解明を目指している。最近では，上記の研究のから得られた知見を，日本語教育の方法論や，人々による話し合いを通じた社会問題の発見や解決のための方法論の構築を模索している。
