カントの実践哲学を基礎づける「超越論的自由」ならびに「実践的自由」の起源を、その生成の土壌である十八世紀ドイツ思想史のうちに精査することにこれまで携わってきた。彼の実践哲学、倫理思想が、現代社会の諸々の問題に対してもつ有効性を検討することが目下の課題である。また、他の西欧諸国に比して保守的であると看做される現代ドイツの「生命」観について、優生学の歴史やドイツ近・現代史を射程に入れつつ考察することにも取り組んでいる。
