　最初の総合商社とされる三井物産が明治中後期ころにかけて、総合商社体制を整えていく過程を中心に、場合によってはさらに幕末維新期の諸藩ならびに明治政府の通商政策にまで視点を拡げ、それが明治初期のいくつかの貿易商社の商取引組織にどのような影響を与えたのかということを研究している。
