温度、圧力や熱など物質を巨視的に見たときに現れる概念を用い、統計性を用いて微視的な立場から自然現象を記述する物理理論は、熱統計力学と呼ばれています。この理論は平衡状態と呼ばれる静的な系の記述においてこれまで素晴らしい成功を収めてきましたが、一方で、流れのある系などの動的な非平衡系に対する熱統計力学は、その基本となる理論の構築においてさえ未だに活発な議論が続けられている研究分野です。私は、そのような非平衡状態を熱統計力学的に基礎付けることに興味を持っています。例として、非常に微小な系の輸送現象の熱的特性や揺らぎを熱統計力学的な立場から研究しています。また、カオス性と呼ばれる、初期時刻の測定誤差が時間が経つにつれて急速に発散する特性に基づいて多粒子系を統計力学的に記述する研究、あるいは、非平衡現象の例の一つである電気伝導の微視的な系における量子力学的特性などについても研究しています。
