教育の本質について、教育目的と教育方法と教育実践の関連という観点から考察している。とくに、20世紀初頭に世界的に広がった新教育運動、すなわち子ども中心の教育思想と教育実践の展開を、アメリカ合衆国に焦点をあてて、分析している。その中で、「教授」、「発達」、「能力」といった教育学の基礎概念の批判的な検討を進めている。
