主として江戸時代の法や裁判を研究対象としているが、そのなかでも２つのことを研究の柱としている。一つは、江戸幕府や諸藩が作ってきた法規範や裁判制度の実態を、現地で史料調査しながら明らかにすることであり、その成果は藩法研究会編『近世刑事史料集』として刊行中である。もう一つは、当時の一般庶民が自分たちの生活に関わる様々な利益を実現していくときに、幕藩権力に対する訴訟や請願活動をどのように活用してきたかを明らかにすることである。幕藩権力における裁判制度は従来から法史学の研究対象とされてきたが、私は「政策形成訴訟」というキーワードをたて、「訴える側」からみた訴訟・請願制度の「利用」という視点から研究を進めていきたいと考えている。
