これまでドイツ・ロマン主義、とりわけヨーゼフ・フォン・アイヒェンドルフ（1788–1857）の作品を研究し、前近代的な要素の中に表れている近代性について明らかにしてきました。1800年頃に興ったドイツ・ロマン主義は、近代文学の一つの始まりと言えます。初期ロマン主義者たちは、自己反省する自我・主体に重きを置いて先進的な思想と実作で革命をもたらしました。それは当時急速に進んだ近代化の中で感知された危機を文学を通して乗り越えようとした、現実に対する考え抜かれた反応でした。世界の違う見方を提示する文学という根本的な考え方はロマン主義全体に通底していますが、のちの後期ロマン主義では、自我・主体への信頼に対する懐疑的・批判的な態度が強く表れてきます。後期ロマン主義に分類されるアイヒェンドルフは生前から今日に至るまでロマン主義の作家の中でもとりわけ、素朴で、敬虔な、（狭義での）「ロマンチック」な詩人とされてきました。しかし、彼の作品を具に調べてゆくと、平易で素朴に見える表現にこそ、近代化を冷静に見つめる眼差し、初期ロマン主義にも通ずるような文学の自己言及、さらにはそのような自己反省的な文学・芸術のありかたについての省察、などが表れていることがわかります。近代にまつわる一連の問題意識は現代にも通ずるものです。そのためロマン主義研究と並行して、ドイツ語の現代文学や詩、および翻訳にも同様の観点から取り組んでいます。
