フランス語を習いはじめた頃、或る先生が「分かるものを読むのは読書ではなく、分からないものを読むのが読書です」と仰った。私は感銘をうけ、これからは分からないものを選んで読もうと秘かに決めた。先生の授業で読んでいたのはフランスの現代思想で、とにかく分かりにくかった。私はこれこそ読書の名に値するものだと思いこみ、爾来分かりにくい思想家をひたすら読み続けたものだから、気がついてみるとその専門の看板をいやいやこっそりと掲げざるをえなくなった。フランス現代思想では、分かるとはいかなることかと問われ、分かろうと欲する「私」にとって絶対的に他なる「分かりえないもの」をいかにして迎えるかが模索される。他者が書いたことを何度も読めば分かるところは増えようが、決して分かりえないところが絶対的に他なるものとして常に残り続け、「私」になおも応えるように呼びかけてくる。そんな経験を私は読書に見いだし、ものを考える上での出発点としている。
