物質的な豊かさがあたりまえの現在の日本では、私たちは、日常生活での小さな不満を感じつつも、政治や社会全般については、現状肯定的―あるいは諦め的―な感覚を共有しているように思えます。そうした風潮を衝いて、最近では精神的な豊かさなどといった外皮をまとった復古的な言説があらゆるところで聞かれます。しかし、私たちが真に自立した市民として社会に参画してゆく上では、なによりも現状の社会における問題点を個々が自覚し、具体的に明らかにすることから始めなければなりません。現在、私は日本近世の村落史を専攻していますが、地域や時代によって様々な社会矛盾のあり様の分析を通じて、現代社会を考える手がかりにしたいと思っています。近世には多くの地域で、大庄屋と言われる百姓身分の役人が、領主の下で広域村落支配にあたっていましたが、その大庄屋による地域支配の構造と特質について、政治と経済の両面から考えていこうと思っています。
