私たちの研究室では、ナノスケールの大きさをもつ物質・材料の電子物性を、理論・計算によって解明し、ナノスケールの領域で顕著に起きる特異な電子物性について、新しい機能物性を理論的に予測し、設計を行っています。
私たちの身の回りには、様々な物質があります。銅などの電気を流す金属、シリコンなどのエレクトロニクス素子に利用される半導体。あるいは、ダイアモンド、黒鉛、カーボンナノチューブは、どの物質も、炭素原子だけからなるにも関わらず、ダイアモンドは絶縁体、黒鉛は金属、カーボンナノチューブは金属または半導体となります。これらの違いは、物質内部の原子がなす結晶構造と、結晶中での電子状態が起源です。これらをミクロな視点で明らかにするのが、電子物性理論です。
ナノテクノロジーの急激な進歩によって、グラフェン(炭素原子だけからなる一原子分の厚みしかもたないシート)などの一原子層の厚みしかもたない究極的に薄い物質などが電子・光デバイスに応用されつつあります。そこでは、従来の半導体物理学では記述できない物理現象が数多くあることが分かってきています。さらに、ナノスケールの世界では、表面やエッジの効果が電子物性に強い影響を与えることが分かっており、そこではマクロな世界では現れない特異な量子物理現象が現れます。このため、従来のデバイス物理理論を単純に使うことはできず、それらを書き換えていく必要があります。新しい理論的な知見を得ることで、高効率のエネルギー輸送や変換などを指向した様々機能の設計ができるようになります。私たちの研究室では、(1) 基礎理論の構築、(2)理論を応用した機能設計、(3)新しい物性の予測という大きな三つの目標をかかげて、解析的な理論計算と大規模な数値計算によって、研究を進めています。
