私たちの研究室では光合成初期過程に重要な役割を果たすカロテノイド色素に注目して研究を行っています。カロテノイド色素分子を系統的に改変・光合成系に再構築し，Ｘ線結晶構造解析等から色素蛋白複合体の電子分布・分子構造を詳細に決定すると同時に，光エネルギー伝達機構および分子間相互作用機構を種々の物性測定を駆使して解明する研究を行っています。自然界には存在しない人工の光合成色素タンパク質超分子複合体を自らの手で創成し，光合成系の動作機構を解明することを通して，物性物理学の言葉で生命の青写真（自然の持つ巧妙さ）を理解することを目的としています。光エネルギー変換過程において従来の概念を打破した基礎概念の構築，高効率・超高速のエネルギー移動の基盤となる理論を確立，そして全く新しい物性物理を創出することを目指して日々研究しています。このような光合成に関する基礎研究の成果の積み上げとして，人工光合成による次世代燃料（Solar Fuels）の生成に関する応用研究にも積極的にチャレンジして行きます。
