バーチャルリアリティ(Virtual Reality; VR)とは,工学的な手段を用いて人間の五感を刺激することにより,実質的に再現する技術です.VR技術を基盤として,コンピュータをはじめとする人工物を使う側である人間の特性に着目したインタフェイスを構築し,人類の知的活動を活性化・支援する研究を幅広く行っています.
VR世界を整合性高く構築しユーザが体感できるようにするためには,様々な分野の技術を統合する必要があります.まず実世界の人間や環境を計測することが必要です.単に計測するだけではなく,計測された情報から人間の状態や感情を推測します.次に,得られた実世界からの入力に応じて,VR世界で起こることをコンピュータでシミュレートします.物理学などの法則に従った計算をリアルタイムに行う技術が必要です.究極的には,ミクロからマクロの法則を階層的に関連付け,世界全体のシミュレーションを実現することが目標です.最後に,コンピュータ内のVR世界の状態を,ユーザの感覚器を適切に刺激して提示する,五感ディスプレイの技術が必要です.効果的な情報提示のためには,人間の知覚や認知に関する知識が欠かせません.
コンピュータやネットワークの中に存在するバーチャル世界と実世界との間の垣根を,技術の力で取り払うことにより,高度に情報化された私達の生活がより豊かで楽しいものになることを目指して研究を進めています.
