X線天文衛星による観測データを使って、超新星残骸について研究しています。超新星残骸とは、星の最後の大爆発(超新星爆発)が宇宙空間に残した天体で、数千万度の高温プラズマが半径数光年にも及ぶ球体として、X線で明るく輝いています。私たち人間や地球を作り上げた様々な元素は星の内部の核融合によって合成され、超新星爆発により宇宙空間に供給されました。元素が合成されるメカニズムを超新星残骸の観測で探っています。宇宙からのX線を観測するためには、観測装置を搭載した人工衛星が必要で、国際プロジェクトに参加して、人工衛星の開発にも貢献しています。また実験室では、将来の衛星搭載を目指して、X線検出器の開発も進めています。
