2011年の大震災以降、特に夏場は電力問題がお茶の間の話題に頻繁に上るようになっています。また、原子力発電への危険性や嫌悪感から再生可能エネルギーへのシフトが重要視されています。これらの問題を解決するうえで、大容量電力貯蔵は必要不可欠です。しかしながら、これを可能にする技術(材料)は確立されているとは言い難い状況です。一方で、回りを見渡してみますと、携帯電話から電気自動車まで二次電池やキャパシタといった小型の蓄電デバイスは我々の生活になくてはならないものとなっています。このように蓄電(および蓄電デバイス)の重要性は明らかですが、今なお、各種用途ごとに最適な高性能蓄電材料の開発は喫緊の課題です。例えば、リチウムイオン電池は今現在非常に様々なところで利用されていますが、材料および原理の両面から、これを真の意味で越えるような電池の実現が望まれています。私は、有機小分子や高分子から無機物質、有機無機複合材料、炭素材料にいたるまで様々な物質群を対象に、大容量や急速充電をキーワードに、新しい蓄電材料の開発研究を進めています。さらに、そのような新しい材料を用いた電池の反応機構について大型放射光施設を用いて明らかにすることで、より高性能な蓄電材料の実現が可能と考えています。
