Research Outline
私たちの肉眼ではとても見ることのできない、ナノメートル（１０億分の１メートル）サイズの微小な分子の世界を、光を使って照らす学問が分子分光学です。私はとくに、分子の構造や分子のまわりの環境を鋭敏に反映する振動分光法という手法を駆使して、液体・溶液から結晶、生きた細胞、バイオフィルム（排水管のぬめりがその一例）まで幅広く研究を展開しています。最近では、振動分光の一種であるラマン散乱と顕微鏡を組み合わせた手法で、細胞のなかの生体物質の分布やダイナミックなふるまいを細胞が生きたままの状態で調べる研究に力を入れています。この生細胞物理化学とも呼べる新しい分野を開拓し、「細胞の個性はどこから生じるのか？」、「孤立した細胞と集団のなかの細胞は機能的にどう違うのか？」といった生物学の基礎的で重要な問いに化学からの答えを与えたいと考えています。また将来的には、さまざまな病気につながる細胞異常の仕組みの解明なども目指しています。
