作物の生産性や環境耐性の強化は、第二の「緑の革命」を起こす技術として強く求められています。トウモロコシやサトウキビなどのC4型作物は、葉内にCO2を濃縮させる機能をもつため、水分や窒素源の利用効率が高く、乾燥・高温地帯での生産性が非常に高いことが知られています。イネや小麦、ダイズ等のCO2濃縮機能を持たないC3型作物をC4型化し、CO2濃縮機能を付加できれば、乾燥・高温地帯や灌漑が難しい地域において、作物を育てることができ、世界の作物生産性を向上させることが期待できます。しかし、複雑なCO2濃縮機能を、C3型作物に付加する国際的な取り組みは、現在の時点では成功していません。そこで、同じ属内にC3型とC4型やその中間型の種が現存するキク科植物を用いて、C3型からC4型へのどのように進化が起こったのかを分子レベルで研究しています。進化過程をヒントにしてC4化を引き起こす遺伝子を明らかにすることができれば、将来、C4化分子育種技術の確立に貢献することができると考えています。
