新規超伝導物質を中心に次世代新機能性材料を設計・探索するとともに、超伝導技術を利用した輸送システム技術の革新を目指します。現在、環境負荷の小さな、自然再生エネルギーを利用した新ネットワーク社会へのニーズが急速に高まっています。具体的には、風力・太陽光発電などの発電システムや再生エネルギー導入のためのスマートグリッドの構築、また、これらに用いられる環境にやさしい高効率エネルギー材料の開発などです。このような自然再生エネルギー材料・技術開発の中で、「超伝導材料」は再生エネルギーの最大の欠点である間欠性を補う広域スマートグリッドの切り札になると同時に、新たな機能を生みだす可能性に満ち溢れています。超伝導体は、銅の100~1万倍の密度でロスなく電流を流すことができるため低損失、かつコンパクトな送電システムが実現可能になります。我々は、21世紀低炭素社会実現のため超伝導材料技術の実用化を目指した研究を行います。また、結晶成長の観点から、ナノ構造・表面・界面・原子配列制御による既存材料の新機能発現及び新機能性材料を創生していきます。
