日本社会と言語（とくに英語）の関係を社会学理論・手法にもとづいて研究しています。とくに次のようなテーマに取り組んでいます。
【外国語をめぐる世論】近年、日本の言語政策・英語教育政策は世論からも大きな影響を受けています。小学校英語政策や外国人の母語教育など、言語をめぐる「日本人」の世論の特質を明らかにすることで、今後の政策の方向性を検討しています。
【外国語教育政策史】戦前～戦後日本の英語教育政策は世界的に見ても（たとえば東アジアや欧州の国々とくらべても）ユニークな変遷を経ています。とくに英語圏国との物理的接触が比較的小さかったにもかかわらず事実上必修に近い英語教育が整備された点は特筆に値します。このように、国内だけでなく国際的にも注目されている日本の英語教育政策の歴史を、史料に即して検討しています。
【仕事と英語】現代社会において外国語学習はもはや学校空間にとどまる問題ではなく、卒業後の様々な場面、たとえば仕事現場でも大きな課題となっています。日本の労働現場と英語の使用実態について、たとえば「仕事現場で英語はどれだけ使われているのか？」「どのような企業がどれだけ英語スキルを強調しているか」などといった問いを、計量分析やビジネス言説の批判的検討を通じて考察しています。
