Teaching and Research Fields
My main area of interest is vocabulary acquisition. My Master's dissertation was about collocation, which is the way that words group together in their normal use. In particular, I am interested in how a learner's native language affects their acquisition of collocational competence in a second language. I am also interested in finding the most effective ways to teach collocation in the language classroom.
In addition to researching vocabulary I am also interested in psycholinguistics; specifically semantic priming. This is where words are recognised faster if they are preceded by a semantically related word. My research involves trying to promote faster recognition of words in second language learners.
