20世紀には二つの世界大戦がありました。ドイツはその中心にあった国です。この二つの世界大戦を通して、18・19世紀にかたちづくられたヨーロッパの近代市民社会の理念は大きな危機に直面します。テクノロジーの発達と情報メディアの多様化、ナショナリズムの高揚とナチズムの台頭、そしてディアスポラとカタストロフィー。先の見えない混沌のなかで、この時代の人々は、不安と期待のあいだで揺れながら〈再出発〉を余儀なくされました。20世紀の文学と思想のひとつの原点は、まさにここにあると言えるでしょう。この戦間期ドイツの文学と思想が、いまのわたしの主な研究対象です。例えばヴァルター・ベンヤミンというユダヤ人の批評家がいますが、この人は文学や映画を〈味読〉しながら、「複製技術」とは何か、「言語」とは何か、「暴力」とは何かという根本的な問題に取り組んでいました。第一次世界大戦から100年を経たいまの時代も、EU・日本を問わず、ベンヤミンの時代におとらず見通しのきかない不透明なものです。ベンヤミンの様々な〈問い〉を手がかりにして〈いま〉を考えることが、わたしの今後の研究課題です。
