Profile
植物と微生物がどのように関わり合っているのかを、細胞レベル、分子レベルで解明することを目標に研究を行っています。普段、我々が目にする植物の周りには、目では見ることができないような微生物が数多く存在します。例えば、葉の上や根の周りにです。この微生物と植物の関わり合いを植物-微生物相互作用と呼びます。最も分かり易い例は、植物がかかる病気だと思います。実際に家の近くで目にすることや、本やニュースなどで目にすることもあるかと思います。あれらの全ては、植物に害を与える微生物によって引き起こされるものです。面白いのは、自然界に存在する微生物は植物に害を与えるものばかりではないということです。植物と共に生き、互いに利益を与え会う道を選んだ微生物も多く存在します。そう言った微生物を共生菌と呼びます。私の研究では、植物がこれら異なる性質を持つ微生物をどのように見分け、敵か見方を判断するのか、そしてその後どのような応答を行うのかを、顕微鏡や、分子生物学的な手法を用いて明らかにしようとしています。このような研究分野で得られる知識は、農業上非常に価値のあるもので、これまでにも様々な現場で活かされています。
