Teaching and Research Fields
My research focuses on visualizing historical events through visual art media (such as photography and video). I aim to create expressions that transcend linguistic barriers between nations. Since 2003, I have been organizing cultural events—primarily exhibitions—both in Japan and abroad that visualize the wartime experiences of Japanese people, focusing on the history of Japanese immigration to French New Caledonia before World War II and the related history of civilian internment in Australia. My fieldwork is conducted primarily in the Pacific region and Japan, where I produce photographic and video works based on interviews and on-site research, as well as engage in writing. Additionally, in collaboration with the Japanese community in New Caledonia, I am involved in activities to uncover new historical narratives, including surveys of historical sites and efforts to locate surviving family members.
