I conduct research focusing on the issue of care work from a gender perspective. More than a quarter-century has passed since the implementation of Japan’s Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) system. However, due to persistent traditional gender biases, women continue to bear the majority of caregiving responsibilities both within the household and in the labor market. Over the past two decades, the participation of men in the care workforce has gradually increased, but in recent years, an increasing number of care workers from abroad have entered the field, particularly from other parts of Asia. These workers are now expected to play a crucial role in addressing the chronic labor shortage in Japan’s rapidly aging society.

Similar to trends in Western developed countries, care work—which includes domestic chores, childrearing, and eldercare—has increasingly come to reflect a complex structure of social inequality shaped by intersectionality, where not only gender but also race and ethnicity are deeply intertwined. This dynamic is contributing to a division among women themselves, exacerbating intra-gender disparities through class stratification.

In addressing how we should understand and respond to these realities, it is essential to critically examine the mechanisms that reproduce gender-based division of labor and entrench social inequality, especially when formulating sustainable eldercare policies for aging societies. Establishing a stable support system for older adults requires serious attention to the working conditions and human rights of care workers.

To this end, I am engaged in empirical research that uses both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, focusing on the organizational structures and professional consciousness of care workers, with particular reference to social support theory.

More recently, my work has extended to educational research and initiatives on social action, with the goal of fostering a society that embraces SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression) diversity, particularly through the lens of human rights education and gender and sexuality awareness.

As a researcher in the field of social work, I strive to apply insights gained from my research to both practice and education.
