中国近現代の知識人と政治との関わりについて研究しています。清末以降の中国では、数多くの政治的・社会的問題が噴出する一方、思想や文化の多彩な発展が見られました。この発展の担い手だった知識人は、思想や文化の世界に閉じこもることはせず、現実の政治にも強い関心を抱いていました。彼・彼女らの関心の表出の仕方は様々でしたが、注目に値するのが、政論と呼ばれる緻密な論理に支えられた政治批評がなされる一方、過激な言論やときに暴力もともなう政治・社会運動に支持が集まった点です。私の研究では、政論の論理を読み解くと同時に、過激な言論や運動を支える情念にも注意を向けています。これまでは、憲法に関する議論や、煩悶青年と政治運動の関係について考察してきましたが、最近は特に、孫文・蒋介石・毛沢東といった中国近現代を代表するリーダーの著述が、知識人によってどのように解釈され、中国社会にどのような影響を与えたのかにも関心をもっています。
