ヒトをヒトたらしめている特質の一つに言語があります。世界には約6000の言語があり、これらは表面的には非常に異なる側面を持ちます。しかし、抽象的なレベルで考察してみると普遍的な規則・原理に基づいて成り立っていることが分かります。私は生成文法という言語理論に基づき、様々な言語を分析することにより、人間言語の普遍的側面を解明しようと努めています。更に、消滅危機言語のフィールドワーク研究にも取り組んでいます。多くの言語学者の試算では、今世紀の終わりまでに少なくとも半分の言語が消滅してしまうと言われています。私はこれまでに中米グアテマラにおいて現地調査をおこない、消滅危機言語であるカクチケル語（マヤ語族）の研究をおこなってきました。最近では、奄美・喜界島で話されている喜界語の研究・調査も開始しました。ユネスコは2009年に、日本においても消滅危機言語が8つ存在し、喜界語はその一つであると報告しています（注：厳密に言うと、ユネスコの報告書では喜界語は奄美語の喜界方言として分類されている）。講義や演習を通じて、学生の皆さんと共に言語の分析手法や理論の構築方法を議論していきたいと思います。また、「消滅危機言語を研究することは重要なのか」や「消滅危機言語を記録・保全することは必要なのか」といったなかなか答えが出しにくいような問題についても学生の皆さんと活発な議論を交わしていきたいと考えています。
