哲学とは、世界そして人間活動を俯瞰的に捉えてよく生きるためのアートである。自然科学は世界を合理的仕方で理解しようとする人間の活動であり、その中で物理学は物質的世界を数学を用いながら理解しようとする人間の活動である。物理学は物質世界の実在とどう関わるのか。またそれを媒介する数学概念はプラトンの言うようなイデア世界にある実在なのか、人間精神の自由な構成物なのか。さらには、数学の本質はその証明にあるのか、あるいはその応用にあるのか。数学において、数論における数という、幾何学における形という直観的なものが、代数学と解析学におけるシンボリックな操作によって常に再構成され続けている。物理学における実在との繋がりは、数学において再構成された幾何学的空間と時間発展における形態の変化と不可欠に結びついているのではなかろうか。このようなことを授業で考えていく。
