僕の主な研究分野は，経済史学および日本経済の長期にわたる成長と構造の分析です。具体的には，日本の経済成長について，古代から現代までのあらゆる歴史資料に書かれた人口・土地・生産・物価賃金などの数的情報を利用して経済諸量データの長期系列を構築し，部門別生産高・実質賃金・生活水準などの推計・分析をおこなっています。最終的には，歴史的国民計算（Historical National Accounts），すなわち超長期にわたる国内総生産（Gross Domestic Product: GDP）を計測することで，日本がどのような経済成長を経験したのかを連続した歴史的現象としてとらえることを目的としています。分析のための方法は，経済諸量データを歴史資料から抽出してデータベースをつくり，それを経済学的・統計学的手法によって実証分析をおこなう計量的アプローチとなりますが，それと同じように，漢文・古文書の読解や史料の検証・批判という歴史学の方法を理解することも重要であると考えています。
