私の研究分野は英語史です。英語史とは読んで字の通り、英語という言語の歴史を研究する分野で、1000年以上前の英語から現在の英語まで幅広い時代を扱います。扱う対象や観点も、発音の変化、語彙の変化、文法の変化、社会的観点から見た英語の変化など、非常に多岐にわたります。私は特に、16世紀以降の「近代英語」と呼ばれる時代を中心に、その頃に多く用いられるようになった近接未来を示す表現群（be going to, be about to, be on the point of, etc.）の発達について、「コーパス」という電子化された言語資料を活用し、実証的立場から研究しています。

昔の英語と今の英語は一見何の関係もないように思えるかもしれませんが、実は、英語の過去を知ると現在の英語についても深く知ることができます。綴りと発音のずれがあるのはなぜか、不規則な形に変化する単語があるのはなぜか、英米で違いがあるのはなぜかなど、歴史を紐解くことで、素朴な疑問への答えが分かります。こうした研究分野の専門知識を英語の授業で応用し、学生の皆さんにとって英語学習の一助となるよう努めています。
