Teaching and Research Fields
My background is in second language acquisition and especially how literacy plays a part in allowing students to reach advanced levels of fluency. Free reading programs have done much to advance L2 fluency, improving areas of vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Within this context, I am also interested in reading motivation and identifying the kinds of material students want to read, what goals they aim to fulfill by engaging a text, and under what conditions they are more likely to read. Related to this is vocabulary development and the correlation between vocabulary size and reading comprehension.
