Olga Antononoka holds an MA in Japanese Studies from the University of Latvia, MA and PhD in Manga Studies from Kyoto Seika University, Japan. Her MA project, "Bishonen in Boys’ Love Manga: Transcending the Phallus", addressed the performative androgyny of the boys’ love protagonist. Her PhD project, which was defended in 2018 ,"Manga-drag: Female Address, Male Cross-Dressing Character, and Media Performativity", focuses on performance, gender and manga as a performative medium through analysis of representation of kabuki theatre in manga.

Research fields include: Japanese studies, Japanese pop culture, media studies, gender studies, manga and anime studies, traditional Japanese theatre
